Description

Rivendell embodies the charm of a bygone era. One of oldest properties on the river, the home was built in the 1930s as a country manor for a well-to-do family from San Francisco. The interior is updated with modern comforts but retains elements of a fine country home: a stone hearth, beautiful wood paneling and floors, and a formal dining room surrounded by paned windows with access through French doors to a series of terraces leading to the river. The outdoor spaces and access to the river are unmatched with stone and brick work throughout 4 separate outdoor living spaces. Steps lead directly to private river access with a dock and boats provided during the warmer months. A burbling fountain, fruit trees, flowering bulbs, lush greenery, and towering redwood trees capture your senses!

The property is named for the peaceful refuge of Rivendell from J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings because of its old-world charm and magic. As "the last homely house east of the sea," it is lovingly set up to evoke the spirit of Rivendell, a haven for adventurers who wish to explore the beauty of the Russian River, Sonoma Valley and nearby sea. It is "a perfect house, whether you like food or story-telling or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Merely to be there is a cure for weariness, fear and sadness."

Perfect for a Getaway Weekend

This property exceeded our expectations. Very clean, comfortable beds, the living room had plenty of space to spread out. The kitchen met everyone's needs and my friends like to cook! The home and property is well maintained and you can tell it has been upgraded over time. The location and views were wonderful. I wish it didn’t rain the weekend we visited because the outdoor decks looked perfect for hanging and enjoying the fresh air and views of the river. However, every room inside had a great view and plenty of space for us all to kick back and relax on our girls getaway weekend. The hot tub gazebo was a bonus. All of us agreed this place is worth a return visit to the area, and for more than just a weekend. Shout out to the attentive staff who communicated with me in a timely manner to make sure we had directions to the home and if we needed anything during our stay. Pay attention to the recommendation to make sure you have the written directions with you. Your GPS will be confused and basically useless in the canyons and tall redwood trees. We enjoyed the scenic tour and once we stopped for directions to get our bearings we found the home easily. -via Vrbo

My husband and I were able to get away without kiddos for the first time in 20 years. This home was so peaceful and lovely. The bedrooms were all cozy and with great views - it was hard to pick which one to stay in! The home is well-appointed and very clean. The hot tub works, is clean, and is well situated in a private gazebo, we were able to enjoy it even though it rained our whole trip. My husband even took up the ukulele since there was one at the house. Thank you for a wonderful stay, we would love to return! -via Vrbo

The entire space was cozy and comfortable. We especially liked the living room as a meeting place for the family. The kitchen was well stocked and easy to cook in; we prepared meals every day we were there. The River access is good, and the kayaks were a great feature we all enjoyed. The washer and dryer were high quality which was a bonus considering how much laundry we generate. Guerneville was about 10 minutes by car, so shopping was easy and convenient.-via Airbnb

The Rivendell house is awesome. The interior is absolutely lovely with a balance of areas to both spread out and come together. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes etc. and while there isn't a "master bath" - you don't really miss it after all the amazing time spent in the area. There are plenty of outdoor spaces to hang out and grill, eat, hot tub, and just simply kickback with a book and a view. The river might be low, and the access is a little murky - but it didn't matter to us. We kayaked (2 singles onsite and we brought our own additionally) everyday and found amazing swimming holes and fishing spots. We will be back any chance we have to book this house.-via Airbnb

Rivendell is indeed the “last homely house east of the sea” as Gandalf the Grey would put it. The owner has put so much thought and heart into making this a fun and comfortable getaway spot for groups large and small.  The kitchen was well stocked with gadgets, a full set of pots and pans, and even a grill! The living room has a huge couch and even bigger TV along with a piano and fireplace for your picturesque evenings in the woods.  During the summer, you'll enjoy direct access to the river with your own private dock.  We enjoyed the spacious bedrooms and comfortable beds.   When we first arrived, we were worried that since this was right off the main road, we would hear traffic, but our fears were unfounded.  This place is as quiet during the day as you need it to be.  You can scale things up for an active fun weekend or just relax in the hot tub.   We cannot recommend Rivendell enough if you're looking for a place to relax and play in Monte Rio.

What a magical place. Warm, cozy, right on the river. We love the vaulted wood ceiling, the stone fireplace, and the piano in the spacious living room with its wall of windows looking over the terraces and the river. All the furnishings are new and supremely comfortable, creating a beautiful space blending historic charm and modern. The kitchen is very well equipped, clean and organized, opening up to a dining room of glistening wood and seating for 12. Great windows and views, and also very private. Big enough for a couple of families — and great for kids. Hot tub is lovely. We'll be back soon!

I loved my stay at Rivendell. It's a big, comfortable, warm house with lots of light and lots of rooms to hang out in. Even though it was late winter, it was so peaceful staying right on the river and watching the world go by. The beds were super comfy (big bonus points for me) and the extra touches were noticed, like specific kitchen equipment and a little dish for rings on the bathroom sink. My favorite room was probably the living room, with all the windows and view of the front garden and back deck and a HUGE couch big enough for everyone to relax. It was so cozy. The front garden was also so inviting with the flowers and garden and fountain too! The hot tub was great too. Although it seems a tad bit cooler than the temperature read? Still it was hot and clean and so great to enjoy.I will say that Monte Rio is about 10 minute drive from Guerneville which is where a big supermarket, restaurants and other stores are located. So if you are looking for a place you can walk into town, this might not be perfect. But Monte Rio is a little away from the summer crowds, which I prefer and it's easy to stock up on food and enjoy the river and house and explore the area. The redwoods, hikes, and other little nearby towns. And you're 10 minutes closer to the ocean and the famous Wildflour Bakery in Freestone as well!Enjoy your stay at Rivendell! I certainly did.
