Retreat in the Redwoods

Reviewed on 2023-03-13 by Bruce Ruttenburg , Hood River, OR US

Just what the doctor ordered! A West Sonoma County retreat. Hot tub under the redwoods, and access to a private 185 acre preserve at the end of the street. The super cute cottage feels bigger than it is. It is only 450 square feet, but has a relatively large bathroom with a tiled shower. A very comfortable and cozy bed. Nice linens. Nice pillows. Well stocked kitchen. It's a gem! The owner's house is on the property, but they were there only half the weekends. They were very respectful and we hardly knew they were there. Just beware that it is in the country and it's a bit of a drive to get to town (Occidental or Bodega are equa-distant), and Sebastopol is 20 minutes or so down windy country roads. But it is also pretty close to the coast and all that offers... including Bodega Bay being in the neighborhood (so to speak) and Point Reyes, Tomales Bay, and the Sonoma Coast all relatively nearby. Isn't that why one would choose this locale? It can be wild and wooly. So, be forewarned... stuff can happen. We had serious weather in the six wintery weeks we were there... wind and rain... and lost our electric power for a few hours on three occasions. After a few minutes, we could hear the neighbors' generators humming and see their lights aglow. We went without. The heat is electric and there is no other heat source... so there was that. And the wind knocked some "widow-maker" redwood branches down which could have done much worse damage than just knocking out the internet cable, which it did do. I worried my car was gunna get smashed, but it didn't. Shortly before we arrived a neighbor did get their roof smashed in when the top of a tree sheered off and crashed on it. These things did happen but I doubt they'll happen to you. What are the odds? The folks at Russian River Vacation Rentals were very responsive and did their best to make things go as smooth as possible, but Mother Nature isn't necessarily interested in prioritizing comfort or convenience for us two-leggeds. All said and done... the place is a gem! A true find! Just don't tell anyone as I'll want it available when I need another West Sonoma County retreat.

Manager's Response

Hello Bruce, We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Joy Cottage! You are right about when things get stormy as far as downed branches and power outages. Thank you for being so understanding and patient while we worked to get these issues sorted.
The wind from those storms were very strong and we are sorry mother nature took out the internet at the end of your stay. We would love to host you at any of our rental properties, you are a wonderful guest and were a joy to host.

really enjoyed our time at the cabin

We really enjoyed our time at the cabin, and we’re honored that we were the first guests at it as an Airbnb! The highlights were the hot tub, the quiet nature trail and the proximity to Route 1, that’s why we picked it and what we loved most. You’re only 10-15 minutes from the beautiful California coast!! The hot tub under four redwoods was truly special and I loved spending evenings out there. The high speed internet was very impressive and allowed me to work and enjoy all the connected comforts of home with the perks of being in the quiet of the forest, loved it! It’s close to Occidental and a larger town Sebastopol which we frequently visited, also 20-30 minutes from the many wineries in the area. Very well located from the great variation in the area, as long as you don’t mind driving a bit to get out to things! River Homes were great and very quick to respond to us, felt very taken care of. A couple things to be aware of is that there are neighbors pretty close and the owners house is on the same property within viewing sight of the hot tub side of the cabin. Still felt secluded and quiet, just not as super private as we expected. Being in the forest it’s very humid, so if you have health issues and need dry air you should be aware of that, the wall units didn’t seem to dehumidify very well.-via Airbnb

Manager's Response

Hello Devin, We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Joy Cottage! It is truly a great starting point in West Sonoma County. As you said it is not far from Highway 1, you have many options of which nearby town you want to visit. The neighbors are close but not right on top of each other which is nice. The homeowner does have a larger home on the same property however they are not there year round or that frequently. The wall units are to heat the cottage if it gets chilly! Redwood forests temperatures are moderate year-round. The climate is Mediterranean with cold, wet winters and warm, dry summers! Thank you for being lovely guests :) And the first guests at the cottage!
