Castle Crag is a place to relax from the bustle of cities and freeways, yet is still within a short driving distance to the finest experiences offered in California. On a protected hillside behind Jenner, this home offers incredible views of the river and the ocean. Excellent stargazing can be viewed from the upper deck (bring binoculars and/or telescope). A short walk to the ocean reveals resplendent wildlife including a seal rookery, blue herons, pelicans, seagulls, cormorants, sandpipers, ospreys, snowy egrets, hummingbirds, and many more.

This beach house offers 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The master bedroom features a Queen bed and en- suite bathroom. The second bedroom offers a Queen bed and the third offers a Queen bed. These bedrooms share a bathroom. The fourth bedroom offers 2 Twin beds, and has a shared bathroom down the hall. If needed, a double futon is in the sunroom. Two decks provide space for a barbecue and a large hot tub. The main living area on the upper floor is a spacious sunny area with connecting living room, sunroom (family room) and fully equipped kitchen. All of these rooms offer incredible views of the Russian River estuary.

Located in the quiet and quaint village of Jenner, Castle Crag is less than two hours north of San Francisco. It has magnificent views of the river valley, estuary and river's entrance to the ocean. As the village is somewhat sheltered from ocean breezes, pleasantly warm weather is the typical climate for most of the year, with occasional sea mists. For those interested in visiting wine county, this home is only a 30 minute beautiful drive along the river to the Korbel Champagne vineyards and many other world class wineries. There are excellent restaurants all along the river and the coastline between Bodega and Jenner. Swimming, surfing and sailing are 15 minutes south at Salmon Creek and Bodega (made famous in the Hitchcock movie The Birds.) Excellent hiking trails and horseback riding are only minutes away, as well as canoeing and rafting on the Russian River.

Know Before you Book:

Maximum Occupancy and Quiet Hours: The maximum occupancy at Castle Crag is 10. Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. Outdoor amplified sound is prohibited at any time.

Parking: On-site parking is permitted for a maximum of 4 vehicles. RVs, trailers and campers are prohibited, per the Sonoma County Vacation Rental Ordinance.

Bed Sizes: Master bedroom: Queen bed, Second bedroom: Queen bed, Third bedroom: Queen bed, Fourth bedroom: 2 Twin beds, Sunroom: Double futon

Heat Source: Central heat, fireplace (no firewood or kindling provided).

A/C: The house does not have air conditioning. Being near the coast, the night time temps drop and just opening some windows is usually enough to cool the house.

Wireless Internet: Castle Crag has a limited wireless internet service. Because of the rural location, typical services like cable and DSL are not available. Instead, Castle Crag uses Excede Internet, which works well for email, text messaging and internet browsing, but is not well-suited for streaming or other internet uses that consume large amounts of data. For a long time Castle Crag was unable to provide any internet service, so we are very pleased to offer guests this option and welcome you to use the internet during your stay.

Sweet place to stay with an amazing view of the river and beach. Plenty of rooms and lounge areas. Enjoyed watching the pelicans riding the thermals from the deck. Only issue we had was one of the downstairs bedrooms had a bug issue, from a hole at the base of the door. Other than that, it was lovely.-via Vrbo

The location and the view are excellent. That being said, the home is a bit dated and the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms with the queen beds were extremely awkward as they shared a jack-and-jill entrance or bathroom so the one in the back had to either walk through your bedroom or the shared bathroom to get out to the main house. It seemed a bit pricey for the awkwardness. There were a couple cleanliness issues at check-in which we reported after we checked out (due to no cell service and Wi-Fi). There is zero cell service at the home and hardly any cell near town for that matter. A day before arrival, River Homes notified us that the Wi-Fi wasn't going to be working on our trip which was inconvenient. They were supposed to issue a credit for the Wi-Fi, but now they've gone silent on updating us and still no credit after they told us it was issued 10 days ago. No response on my last request for update either, they just blamed it on Airbnb the first time I asked.-via Airbnb

Gorgeous view, but worth noting that the driveway is challenging to get up to and in and out of and there are a good bit of stairs which was challenging for the older members of our party. The home itself is fine, but a bit more dated than expected. We had the misfortune of having zero WiFi available the entirety of the trip and the location receives zero data whatsoever, so for us it was a major headache having to drive a minimum of 10-15 minutes into town to borrow WiFi or get signal. Also not quite so infant/toddler friendly. While they do have a “Pack and Play”, it looks like it’s from the 70s and we were not comfortable putting our child there. Nice place if you are looking for a stay to disconnect and want an incredible view of the water, but certainly some considerations above worth noting.-via Airbnb

If you have Verizon it does work best in our area, but Jenner is one of those very rural places where most cell phones don't work well enough to be reliable. Satellite Wi-Fi at the home works best for email and social media, but not for video, streaming, or high-data needs. We also make sure there are landlines available for calling in our out in case of emergency. We tried to get the internet service provider over during your stay and they did not have a sooner appointment available. My group of friends LOVED staying at Castle Crag for a long New Year's weekend. My husband had some initial concerns after reading some other reviews here, but he wrote to Russian River Vacation Homes to ask about things like the safety of the deck, and he got a comprehensive response within a couple of hours - we were blown away by the customer service. I'm happy to say the house was clean, cozy, and perfectly safe. The hot tub and the view from the deck and sunroom are the two most awesome features here - pics don't quite give you a sense of how lovely the view over the Russian River is! The location is great too - you can walk down the hill to a convenience store/gas station and the charming Café Aquatica. Depending on your fitness and mobility level, you might be able to walk to beaches from here, but when a friend and I attempted it with her two dogs we wound up turning back after enjoying a beach view at one of the turnouts high up on a cliff - the narrow highway was a little too dicey for us to continue. All in all this was a fantastic stay. I'd love to return and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!-Via VRBO

incredible in every way

This was our annual family get together, including Roxy, the old dog. The house was super spacious, no body got into anyone's way. We old folks had our master hideway when we needed some quiet away from the teens. The huge living space with windows and views to die for was our main activity area. While the young folks went kayaking, we watched from the deck: Kayakers, cows in the pasture, the tides go in and out. Lots of kitchen supplies. Great walks up and down the roads, to the open space above and the cafes at the water. We celebrated my 80th birthday there and all the stairs were good for the constitution and great exercise. We all absolutely loved it here ,and the whole wonderful cool and moist coast. We certainly had a wonderful time and half of us hated to have to drive back to the hot Utah desert. Thanks for offering the home for us travelers. We will remember the stay for ever.

A very comfortable stay for 8 people and 2 toddlers! All the amenities are provided and the house is very spacious. The views are lovely and you’re only 15 minutes from river access or ocean beaches. The driveways and roads in the neighborhood are very steep. Use caution on the steps up to the deck, it’s best to use the steps towards the back of the house if you need better footing. Internet is sparse but that’s what we expected being on the rivers edge. All in all we were very pleased with our stay and will recommend to friends! - via AirBnB

Castle Crag was the perfect place for a group of 8 women to spend our yearly retreat. The view of the river and ocean from the house, patio, and hot tub was fantastic. The house is surrounded with lush greenery which makes it a bit magical. Having both a sitting room and living room allowed us to spread out when we wanted to and to come together and socialize at other times. The kitchen had everything we needed, the beds were comfortable and having three bathrooms was a plus. Care should be taken turning into the driveway. It is a rather sharp turn. Also, the uneven brick steps up to the front door require care as well. We will definitely return.

We had a wonderful weekend. The views are spectacular. We spent a lot of time on the deck as the weather was wonderful, even though it was early October. We used the house for a family event that involved 7 adults and it was perfect for us. There is a very comfortable family room with chairs and sofa around a low table, perfect for board games. A large table in the kitchen easily accommodated us. The kitchen is well-appointed with all the cookware we could need. Nice dishes, glasses and cutlery. I had brought extra paper towels and toilet paper, but we didn't need it as the house was well-stocked. Plenty of bedding and the beds are very comfortable. It's a short drive to Goat Beach. If you have time, it's a lovely drive down Rt1 to Bodega Bay where there is a lovely walk along the cliffs. River Homes was excellent about answering all my questions quickly and I would be happy to rent any of their homes again.

This is an amazing place for spending time with family and friends. The views from the living spaces are simply incredible! The kitchen is big and can accommodate many guests, along with the living room where you can play board games and feel like you are in the outdoors. The location was very good. Jenner is so quiet and there are tons of nature activities you can do in a 10 miles radius. The bedrooms style is a little old, but we spent most our time in the living room. Make sure to bring soap, body wash and shampoo as there was none.-Airbnb Guest-Thank you so much for staying with us! =) Castle Crag does supply hand soap, but guests should bring along any other needed personal toiletries. We had a lovely stay at Castle Crag. We were a group of 6 adults and 1 child and this home was the perfect space for all of us. The house was clean and organized. We enjoyed cooking dinners each night, lounging in the living room by the fireplace, and soaking in the hot tub. The views are spectacular. There's a gas station a short (though steep) walk from the house where you can get basic items. Blind Beach was a quick 5 minute drive away. Really an outstanding property. Beautiful view in a cute, little tucked away town. Sunsets on the deck each night were just the best. A little far from any one thing, but also access to so much (driving - 5 mins to Sonoma Coast State Park, 15 mins to cool golf course, 25 mins Guerneville and russian river stuff, 40 mins to Healdsburg wineries). Only important negative FYI (that they tell you to be fair) is A) you have zero cell service and B) ubers/taxis are impossible. So if you want to do wine country, either have a DD or call a taxi a day+ in advance. Overall - can't recommend enough. Stay here!!

We had a great time in this beautiful home! The views can't be beat with the Russian River flowing into the Pacific Ocean. Weather was overcast which is quite normal for that area, but we did have enough sun to experience a once in a lifetime sunset! We were able to cook a Christmas feast with the fully stocked kitchen. The place was very quiet, hot tub wonderful and fireplace beautiful....All and all a very homey, comfortable stay. Hiking around Goat Rock just across the river and exploring Fort Ross and hiking along the coast there were beautiful, memorable experiences as well!

I rented this house for my best friend's bachelorette weekend. We had ten girls in all, which is the maximum capacity of the property. The house was perfect for our needs, and I don't think this is the last time someone from our group will rent it.The value was incredible- this house is a steal considering the capacity and stunning views of the Russian River and the Pacific. The town of Jenner is extremely small, but for any group that plans to spend most of their time in the house, hanging out, using the hot tub, playing games, making meals, or for those who intend to use it as a jumping off point to explore the Russian River valley, it is perfect. The interior is much larger than I expected from the photos, and there are a couple of different common areas for people to hang out in. Furnishings are dated (blue carpets, etc.) for sure, but that's likely why the home is such a strong value for the space and location.There are four bedrooms, but there is a futon that folds out in the front room, as well as a sleeping pad and bedding that could be used anywhere in the house. People need to feel comfortable sharing beds, as 3/4 rooms feature a double or queen bed, but we found the arrangement comfortable. Note that one of the bedrooms on the bottom floor is accessed by walking through another bedroom or the jack and jill bathroom.We brought in a chef on the first night to make us dinner, and the kitchen facilities were a bit tight to make a 3 course meal for 10, but it was wonderful to have everything we needed to make breakfasts and dinner the second night. The fridge is full-sized, many people have left spices, etc. in the cabinet if you forget anything, and there is a dishwasher! The coffeemaker was leaking when we were there, but I sent an email to the management company the day we left, and they said they would get it replaced right away. There are adequate dishes and glasses for 10, and my only suggestions would be to provide hand soap at the kitchen sink, and to replace some of the older sauté pans that are bowed (which makes cooking on the flat top more challenging).The driveway is somewhat steep and the road leading up to the house is essentially one lane, so I recommend parking cars in a way that leaves any vehicle that will leave first accessible. Once you have a few cars parked, it's hard to maneuver.The wifi is definitely weak, but since River Homes disclosed this, it was no problem at all. We were able to connect on our cell phones and send iMessages (not photos, but messages went through fine), but no ones laptop could connect at all. So- I wouldn't bank on being able to work remotely or being able to stream videos, but if all you need to do is send a few messages, you'll be fine.Overall, I highly recommend this house, and would definitely rent it in the future when planning group stays in this area!

Russian River Thanksgiving Week

Overall

We had a wonderful 5 days at Castle Crag. We had our immediate family under one roof, 3 adult couples, two grandchildren, and a "grand-dog!" The residence was fantastic, fit our family perfectly, fully equipped for a Thanksgiving get-away. It was comfortable and cozy, with great weather most of the week. The one day it rained, we enjoyed the grille, the hot tub, movies, and each other....we could hear the ocean waves crashing, and the views, including sunrises, morning fog, sunsets, and the night sky were all spectacular! This is a quiet place, with ready access to the Russian river, the beaches and wine country, so it was a perfect location for a balanced, relaxing vacation with family. The staff were very easy to work with and met our every need. We would highly recommend this vacation home! Looking forward to coming back to Castle Crag!
