Description

Big Bertha's has all the ingredients of a beloved vacation home. It is comfortable, stylish, unique, well-appointed, and private yet conveniently located. Inside and out, Big Bertha's expertly combines convenience and comfort with playful cabin chic. Guests love the luxurious linens and special amenities at Big Bertha's!

Amenities include a bocce ball court, outdoor fireplace, hot tub, gas grill, well-stocked kitchen, charming dining room writing desk, reading spots, games and books, smart TVs, high-speed internet, gas fireplace, and kids game room. Big Bertha's is equally equipped to accommodate families, groups of friends, couples, lovers, food lovers, wine lovers, writers, philosophers, morning people, evening people, middle-of-the-day people and, well, pretty much anyone!

Big Bertha's sits on a hillside and is two levels. From the driveway, two flights of stairs lead to the deck and front door. Just inside the front door is a quaint mudroom with hooks for coats, a spot for muddy shoes, and the washer/dryer.

Upstairs - The recently remodeled kitchen features stainless steel appliances, attractive cabinetry, and opens the dining area. The bar counter transitions smoothly to the dining area, where the dining table comfortably seats 8. Don’t miss the coffee station! A sliding door leads to the deck with a gas BBQ, picnic table, and (seasonal) folding Adirondack chairs. An open doorway from the dining area leads to the living room with extra features like a chess table and writing desk. A short hallway, accessible from both the living room and the kitchen, leads to two bedrooms (one with a queen bed and one with two twins) and a full bathroom (shower over tub).

Downstairs - A spiral staircase connects the upstairs living room and downstairs “suite.” Featuring a game room, with a double futon for additional sleeping space, smart TV with Netflix (no cable), a Foosball table, and a small master suite with a queen bed, and a small, yet full, bathroom with a shower. Sliding doors lead to a small lower deck with two (seasonal) Adirondack chairs - a great spot for a morning cuppa!

Outdoors - The main outdoor living areas are on the same level as upper story of the house. In addition to the deck with gas BBQ and outdoor dining, there are a side yard with a bocce ball court and a back patio with a hot tub and outdoor shower.

Big Bertha's is named for the original owner, Bertha. She and her husband built the house in 1952 and she is still a welcome visitor. When walking though the hallway, notice the artwork, which are framed pieces of the original flooring found during the remodel.

Know Before You Book:

Maximum Occupancy and Quiet Hours: The maximum occupancy at Big Bertha's is 7. Quiet hours are from 10:00 pm until 7:00 am. Outdoor amplified sound is prohibited at all times.

Parking: There is parking in the driveway for 3 vehicles. RVs, trailers, and campers are prohibited, per the Sonoma County Vacation Rental Ordinance.

Bed Sizes: Bedroom One (upstairs): Queen Bed, Bedroom Two (upstairs): Two Twin Beds, Bedroom Three (downstairs): Queen Bed, Futon in downstairs living area.

Heat Source: Central Heat.

A/C: The house does not have air conditioning. Being near the coast and under the redwoods, nighttime temperatures drop and opening some windows is usually enough to cool the house.

Electronics: The house is equipped with 2 smart TVs: the one in the upstairs living room has cable and DVD/BluRay players, and one in the downstairs game room has a dedicated Netflix account and a DVD/BluRay player – no cable.

Downstairs Ceiling: The downstairs ceilings are 7'2", which is slightly lower than average.

Location: Big Bertha's is in the Guerneville neighborhood of Guernewood Park - just west of downtown. It is a 5-minute walk to the Russian River and a 20-minute walk into town. There is a playground, tennis courts, neighborhood beach, and a restaurant all within a few minutes walk.

This was my second time staying at this property with Russian River Homes and it did not disappoint. Big Bertha has become a well-loved staple in my community. The house is peaceful, cozy, spacious, and full of beautiful charm. It's clear that the owners and Russian River Homes have put a lot of care and intentionality into the home, from the amenities to the clear instructions, to the art and comfort of the space. I celebrated my 35th this time with loved ones and we all had a wonderful time. The property is like a little private treehouse and is conveniently located close to town for quick grocery runs or plans. It was also great for my dog, Riley, as the outdoor deck is fully fenced in for her to run around while we cook with the sliding door open. Thank you again, Big Bertha! Highly recommend.-via Airbnb

This house is a 10/10, I highly recommend it. The location is very close to the river downtown and is very private. The outdoor space is awesome. We went during the Fall season, and even though the weather was chilly, we spent a fair amount of time outside. We loved the giant fire pit, the hot tub and the bocce ball court. An added bonus is that the yard is completely fenced in, so we didn't have to worry about our pup running off. The inside was very clean, well stocked and I loved the decor. The bedrooms are a bit small, but that wasn't an issue for us. Rent this house! You will not regret it-via Airbnb

This cabin is beautiful and the outdoor space is great!! You are surrounded by trees. The long driveway also allows for plenty of cars. The kitchen and space overall were great and well-supplied. However, the "twin" beds and the "futon" are tiny and you should know that they are not comfortable sleeping accommodations for adults. The other two beds were comfortable for one adult and would be okay for a cozy couple. It's a real stretch however to say that this place accommodates 7 people, unless at least 3 of them are young children.-via Airbnb

7 family and friends rented Big Bertha to celebrate 2 birthdays in the group. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect venue! The cabin was spotless, in a superb location for river and town access and super cute. A large movie, board game and book collection, bocce ball, and tetherball kept us entertained in the evenings. The big outdoor wood fire place was perfect for s’mores after relaxing in the super clean hot tub. Great outdoor shower too! The cabin was thoughtfully well stocked with all the essentials and more. We didn’t need to use half the kitchen supplies or linens we brought. The floor plan is well laid out for singles, couples and kids. Great communication prior and during our trip. Information for everything was easily found and every detail had been thought of. Everyone had a fabulous time. We will definitely rent this one again!-via Vrbo

Home felt private, setting was relaxing under the trees while also being able to soak up the sunshine. Fully equipped kitchen, outdoor games, hot tub and outdoor shower! Beds were comfortable as well and loved the décor and attention to detail. Driveway is steep and tricky Angle, lots of stairs up to home which creates that tree house feel. Spiral stair case could be a bit challenging for some as well. Overall wish we could have stayed longer at " Big Bertha's". Really loved this special home and the history.-via Airbnb

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Big Bertha's. The home is exactly as described - great options for people to gather together, but also plenty of cool spaces for 1-2 people to relax. Very private and peaceful. We loved using the hot tub and outdoor shower. Everything worked great and the host was super responsive with the few things that we needed to ask about (extra bocce balls, needed info about the outdoor firepit - which we learned is not useable during dry season). The home is difficult to find the first time, but the directions are perfect. It is a very tight left-turn up the drive-way - requires a "3 point turn" (or more with a longer vehicle)- but it is totally worth it.-via Airbnb

We stayed for my son’s wedding on July 4 wedding the place with roomy and comfortable . My husband and I stayed in the bedroom below and sons stayed upstairs so it felt like to 2 separate places . What a lovely place and well stocked with movies, books, games and activities. My only issue was that I did not book for a longer stay. I TRULY appreciate the different options for coffee in the morning. I am a french press lover and they actually had one i could use instead of the coffee maker. We had an issue with the lock for the outdoor activity cabinet and they promptly contacted me (just a stuck lock) to fix the issue. I am hoping we can return again in the future... for a longer stay this time. The home is also so convenient to the lake and downtown/grocery. One thing you may want to pass on is the water taps in the upstairs bathroom... they don't quite shut off when you turn them the entire way back.. they have to hover a little before a full return... i learned it pretty quickly to just make sure the water was truly off. I don't think it would be an issue with adults.. but perhaps children.

We loved this place. The property was very cute and comfortable and in such a beautiful place. The internet went out the second day we were there so we were unsure on trash procedures as we couldn’t read our email. The out door fire pit was nice for relaxation and roasting marshmallows. We had a lovely stay at Big Bertha's. The home is cozy and nicely situated where it felt private, yet very close to the town proper (roughly a 5-minute drive). The home is well equipped, and all the beds are very comfortable. The hot tub is nice, but definitely on the smaller side - we were nearly on top of each other when there were 4 of us in it. We didn't end up using the grill, but nevertheless appreciated that it was very clean. Overall, we had a great stay and I'd recommend this place for other people looking for a nice, relaxing place in Guerneville.-via Airbnb

Very nice place to stay. No T-Mobile network in the area, be sure to download offline maps and carry instructions sent by host. Very clean and clutter free home. Patio space was great and had a door so I was able to let my dog chill out there without worrying. Downtown is like 2 min drive from here so that’s great. To get to the house is single lane roads. 3 things to know that might help others 1. If you are staying downstairs and have a dog, there is not a gate that closes off the downstairs deck. Only the upstairs deck is completely fenced in and gated. Also, the only way your dog can go upstairs and down is by using the outside stairs. The metal spiral staircase is no bueno for dogs or kids. 2. If you’re staying downstairs, the downstairs bedroom has a step down into the hallway. Be mindful of this as you’re moving about. I was in a hurry and forgot. I had quite a fall. 3. The hot tub seats 4 at a time comfortably. Everything else was as described and my positive comments echo those listed in other reviews. Comfy beds, liked the linens and robes, nice space, close to town, stocked kitchen, bottle of wine. Big game selection (although outdated). I would go back but it was pricey so no time soon.-via Airbnb

We had a lovely time at the house. The beds were very comfy and there was plenty of games, movies, and fun things to do in the house (especially with it raining the entire time we were there, which made the place feel magical). We felt the space exactly fitted what we needed for a chill weekend for a bunch of friends. While we didn't get to use the outdoor fireplace due to the rain, we still got to use the indoor gas fireplace and felt cozy. Many of us spent the afternoons reading or playing board games. We had a lovely stay at this cabin. It was spotless and just as pictured. Beds were comfy. The location was just what we were looking for - we were tucked away in the trees, yet were very close to restaurants and things to do. There are plenty of wineries to visit nearby. Of note - the driveway is a very sharp U-turn up which was tricky in the rain. Also the staircase downstairs is very small and winding, not suitable for very young kids or elderly. The kitchen is just barely stocked - consider bringing extra paper towels, ziplock bags, Saran Wrap, etc. but if you need anything, Safeway is less than 5 min away!-via Airbnb

Big Bertha’s is a truly special place. Beauty and style inside and out. We had a wonderful week and were sad to leave. Highlights: -Very clean, kudos to the cleaning crew! -Sitting on the comfy Adirondack chairs with views into the redwood forest was heavenly -The fact that it stayed cool even on the warmest days indoors and on the shaded deck. Keeping windows open at night and closed during the day was key. -Proximity to a sweet neighborhood river beach was convenient to either walk or make the short drive to park on the main road. -A truly comfortable great room with cozy seating for the whole group, reading nook and movie, book collections were great bonuses -Stylish, interesting decor throughout -High functioning WiFi for those working from home, upstairs only -My family enjoyed the cushy egg crates on all mattresses. I liked that they were easy to remove for a firmer mattress. -Ceiling fans in the upstairs bedrooms! -Well organized even in the smaller spaces (bedrooms, kitchen) -A pleasant, easy walk to two great restaurants: Baked on the River had yummy coffee/tea drinks, lunch and a beautiful cafe garden. Oxbow had excellent, reasonably priced dinners and also a beautiful outdoor patio - Bocce Ball!! Family fav. -Hot tub was clean altho too hot outdoors for us to use -Downstairs space was more spacious than expected and beautifully set up -Russian River Rentals staff was very responsive. A few warnings: -The driveway is at a narrow, steep and odd angle. The road itself is narrow and only wide enough for one car. Exiting the driveway is a 3-4 point turn at minimum every time. (cars passing were not always patient with this) My husband took the corner a little too confidently and severely damaged the side of the car. The rental company says they will ask the owners to consider installing a mirror at the end of the driveway and hopefully bolster the tightest edge. -The one sliding glass door upstairs had no screen door, making it unusable for airflow during peak mosquito season. -Bring your own condiments and other kitchen essentials like foil. Overall we were so pleased with the astounding beauty of the nature surrounding the home and the thoughtfulness of the layout inside. Would feel very lucky to return.-via Airbnb

We so enjoyed our stay at "Big Bertha's". This rental offers the perfect combination of tranquility and cozy chic ambiance for a group gathering with plenty of on-premise entertainment. Every amenity is provided and more. The deck area, surrounded by the forest was so peaceful. We soaked in the hot tub, relaxed around the fire pit and played some of the provided games. The beds were comfortable and the robes were a nice touch. We especially appreciated the fully stocked kitchen which had every cooking accoutrement from the basics to all the detail items like serving platters, cheese knifes, corn cob picks etc. This rental is perfect for the food enthusiast for whom meals and snacks are the main event of a weekend getaway. Big Bertha will always have a very special place in my heart! I came here with my partner and close friends to celebrate a birthday and we had an amazing time. The house and outdoor space is truly beautiful, and there's enough privacy to feel like you're nestled up in the forest, while also being a really convenient proximity to town (only about a mile away). We cooked some delicious meals, including a good bbq, and all ate around the dining room table. :) Great fenced in yard for our dog too, which felt really comforting. Thank you so much! We had a great time at Big Bertha's. We enjoyed walking down to the river or driving a short ways to other river access points. We enjoyed the hot tub and the bocce ball. We were really impressed with the attention to detail in the house. It is clear that they put in the extra effort to make this house a great place to stay. Everything was really well organized and exceptionally clean. The library of books, games, and videos in the house was fun, and the foosball was great. We would definitely come back!

We loved this beautiful home, nestled in the gorgeous redwoods! It was perfect for our family. We appreciated all the kids books and games and the foosball and all the gorgeous decor! The kitchen was great for our holiday meal and many other meals. We loved relaxing and reading in the cozy, treehouse like living room. The downstairs living room was great too; this extra gave everyone space to get away and relax. We loved this home so much and can't wait to come back. The location is fabulous and so close to town. We loved our stay at Big Bertha's. The house is perfect and so much like home, the beds are so comfortable. Loved all the notebooks and signs in the house. The location is just great for Armstrong Redwoods and wineries. We are a game family, so the bocci and the board games were a big hit. As well as the hot tub. Definitely will come back when in California again.

We enjoyed our stay at Big Bertha's yes we did! We will love to stay there again for a family get-together. We hope that others enjoy their stay as much as we did. The only thing that we didn't get to do was go in the hot tub it was a bit chilly however when we come back we would love to stay when it's a little bit warmer outside. My daughter loved the place and loved all the food that her mom made there. Seven of stayed at Big Bertha's for two nights. The place has a great kitchen and all the amenities which allowed us to cook most of our meals there. Common areas were cute and spacious for us to hang out and play games. Even though it rained the whole time, we were perfectly content staying in this beautiful home and enjoy ourselves. It was a perfect getaway place. We were also only minutes away from Guerneville restaurants and grocery stores. Highly recommend it!-Airbnb Guest-

My girlfriends and I rented this house as part of a bachelorette trip. We loved it. The house is spacious and comfortable. We loved the hot tub and the fireplace for relaxing. We also enjoyed being super close to the wineries, the beach, and the redwoods. It was a nice touch to have a clean, unwrapped sponge on the sink. I can't tell you how many rentals I've had where they allow guests to re-use items like this from prior guests. It shows that they are thinking about cleanliness. Overall a great trip. Well, upon arrival you're just amazed at this home because it's sooo well stocked, organized, there's signs and directions for everything! The outdoor space was amazing. They have outdoor activities available, jacuzzi, fireplace, grill. This house has everything. It's in a quaint neighborhood surrounded by trees. My husband and I spent our birthdays here with our dogs, baby and another couple friends. There was plenty of room for all. The house is great, bedrooms have queen beds (bedrooms are on the smaller side FYI), except the kids room has 2 twin beds. All amenities worked great. Thanks for relaxing stay!

Lovely spot in the trees

Big Bertha was the perfect spot for my almost two week vacation. The first half of my trip was with my two adult kids and a couple of friends of my daughter to celebrate her birthday and and have some family time. The place worked very well for this; plenty of space to spread out but also nice communal areas. After the family left; I hosted three of my lady friends for the next five days. Perfect again for the amount of people. We had a wonderful time using the hot tub, making food and of course lots of laughter and wine form the local wineries. My daughters small dog was my only companion for the whole trip and he loved the place, especially the squirrels in the trees and the sun lounging on the deck.Source: VRBO

We rented Big Bertha's for a girl's weekend away with 6 women. Big Bertha's was conveniently located to wineries and Healdsburg, and right outside of the town of Guerneville. The house was super cute and fun, with plenty of room for the 6 of us with all the amenities we could hope for. We were looking for a place to hunker down and pass the New Year quietly and Big Bertha's very much fit the bill. The dogs were happy, the people were happy, the kitchen, dining and living areas were warm and comfortable and the hot tub hot! Any questions? Some observations, though. Don't choose Big Bertha's if you hate stairs. The stairway to the front entrance intimidated even our dogs and the member of our party with the bad foot had to take it very slow. And the interior stairway resembles more a fireman's pole than a real staircase...... Town is a scenic twenty minute walk away but beware of walking along the highway. Cars zoom around the two major curves you'll pass and it can be scary. But we're picking nits here. Everything else about this place rocked!Source: VRBO

This home was everything we hoped it would be and more! Clean and comfortable, it suited our family perfectly. The downstairs area was ideal for our son and daughter in law, and the upstairs just right for ourselves and our other son. It was cozy without being cramped. When you look out the windows, you see trees! When you open the doors or windows, you smell the forest! It was like being a millions miles away but close enough to town to not be totally isolated. I've stayed at a previous Russian River Vacation Rental property to spend time with my two teenage kids. This time my son said "Dad, each time it gets better and better..." We had a great four night stay. We spent a couple days exploring the nearby beaches in Jenner and those along the Russian River. But our favorite place was Big Bertha's. It was impeccably clean and extraordinarily decorated. My kids begged me to buy the place straight away! We loved the spa, fire pit, and playing tether ball. And before bed we enjoyed watching a Netflix movie. I can't recommend RRVR (and specifically Big Bertha's) more highly. We spent the last 3 days here and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It suited our needs very well. We were staying with our son and his family (including almost 2 yr old Zoe). There are two levels. My wife and I stayed downstairs. The two upstairs bedrooms were perfect for Zoe and her parents. This house has great indoor and outdoor living areas. Plenty of room to spread out and to enjoy different times of day in the various settings. House is well equipped and has lots of helpful instructions posted. The negatives were few and all related to kitchen equipment. None of the knives are sharp and there is no sharpener. The can opener needs to be replaced. There was no medium sized saucepan. Fairly minor inconveniences, but I am listing them here because I doubt the owners are aware of these things and they can be easily remedied. This is a nice house with lots of history. The driveway is steep, but easy to use and not a problem. It was a little hard to find, we drove by it twice, but once we found it, the rest was simple.
