Description

The Hungry Tortuga is a perfect summer rental for families. With a casual layout, lots of sun, and nearby beach access, The Hungry Tortuga is a place for family and friends to gather, enjoy each other’s company and immerse themselves in the beauty of the area. Think afternoon BBQ'ing on the patio, lazy days on the beautiful beach and swimming in the Russian River, daytrips to the Sonoma Coast, local wineries, or into the charming nearby towns of Duncan’s Mills and Monte Rio.

The Hungry Tortuga is a two story historic home with modern conveniences and lots of charm. The lower level was recently remodeled, while the upper level retains all the flavor and fun of The River’s heyday.

The lower level is the entrance level. The front door is just one step up from the patio and opens into the kitchen. The kitchen has been recently remodeled with new appliances (no dishwasher), custom cabinets and a large bar counter with bar stools. The kitchen is open to the living room and dining area. The table seats 6, while the bar counter seats 2. Off the living/dining area is a bedroom with a queen bed. Off the living/dining area the opposite direction is a short hallway with a full bathroom, supply closet, and back door (the quickest way from the downstairs to the upstairs).

Exterior stairs lead from the lower level to the upper level. The upstairs, with its steeply pointed open-beam ceiling and small adjacent rooms, feels like a clubhouse or secret fort. While an unusual space, it has undeniable charm and a relaxing vibe. Since there are no doors, just curtains, separating the sleeping areas, this is a casual sleeping arrangement. Guests with kids or groups of friends will be pleased by the number of beds. There is a double futon in the living area, with its loungy style and flat screen TV, a queen bed in the side bedroom, and a twin bed and a twin day bed located in a little nook off the back of the living space. The upstairs also has a full bathroom.

The main outdoor living area is the front patio, with outdoor dining for 8, a charcoal BBQ, a hammock, additional seating and a fire pit. There is a good mix of sun and shade, with sun in the morning and shade provided by the large redwood tree in the afternoon. The Hungry Tortuga is a fully-fenced property in the historic neighborhood of Villa Grande. The back side of the property runs adjacent to the path to the Villa Grande Beach, one of the nicest beaches on the Russian River. Path access is just one door down.

Thanksgiving week

We were 2 families and a dog traveling for Thanksgiving week, and the house worked really well for us, both regarding location and amenities. The yard was fully fenced which was great for the dog. The layout of the house was a little odd, but worked for our crew — there is 1BR on the main floor, with other beds and another living room upstairs — accessible only through external stairs. Since our crew included teens, and not young children, this worked well and gave everyone their own space. The kitchen was well appointed, and we cooked a full Thanksgiving meal, turkey and all!-via Airbnb

Excellent location, a cozy sleeping space for 5-6 people, and easy check in / out with a lockbox. Have to use a separate guest portal to get your lockbox code. FYI - with practically no reception in the area, you definitely need to save all your codes and directions ahead of your trip so you aren't stuck! Luckily we thought ahead for that. The space itself is well loved, a bit worn but kept clean and fresh, and has two showers/toilets/sinks plus a kitchen. We had an issue with the stove which we contacted the management about, and I believe someone came by while we were out to ensure the gas was safely off. We appreciated their attention and response. I recommend bringing a few extra kitchen supplies if you need to cook (paper towels, coffee, zip bags, spices, etc.) but we were able to make a lovely dinner and breakfast with the available supplies and our own groceries.-via Airbnb

Thank you for your feedback Sarah. My apologies for not being able to get someone out there. I reached out about trouble shooting the stove knobs and was not able to get you on the line after leaving a voicemail. We are working on hiring maintenance/inspectors to be on staff for the weekends, so when a situation arises they come out and make sure things like gas leaks, troubleshooting appliances and any other concerns are handled in a timely fashion. I hope you were able to enjoy your stay.

Very nice charming place with great access to the river. Well stocked and very clean. If your a light sleeper on the bottom floor the footsteps on the second floor can keep you up but we ran a fan to drowned out the noise. Enjoyed our stay at The Hungry Tortuga. Home was very clean when we arrived and kitchen tools and pots/pans were satisfactory. Also beds were comfortable. I was not expecting the exterior stair and the disconnect to the upstairs bedrooms, bath, and living area, but it actually worked out well that my daughter, her husband and baby had that separate space for the numerous naps and early bedtimes, that the baby required. For whatever reason, I missed that in the description of the property, if it was there. Make sure dogs, you bring, are up to date in flea and tick medicine. Our dog picked up a couple of them but they didn't make him sick. I think they fall from the trees, not sure. Beautiful area and a very relaxing long weekend, would definitely return to the area again for a get away weekend.-Via Airbnb

This place is a gem. We are not that familiar with Russian River so we based this booking on other reviews and were extremely happy. The house is nestled in the woods with a very short walk to the river. Even on a holiday weekend there was still enough space for our two families to spread out at the beach and enjoy the area. We really loved the patio with the fire pit and bbq. We never left the area as there was no need - the place has everything. We will come back again!

We had a great mini vacation at The Hungry Tortuga. We have stayed at many properties in the Villa Grande/Monte Rio area so we have lots of comparisons. First, you can't beat being this close to the river! The property was nice and clean and when we discovered no hot water on the 2nd floor it was fixed within a few hours on a Saturday right before 4th of July. Stupendous service and much appreciated! Kids loved being upstairs away from adults so a win win. The only downside was the kitchen cookware. Very sparse and only 1 saucepan had a lid. All looks beaten up and warped. Not even a spatula, I had to go buy one because all that was available was a bbq HUGE one. Also, no can opener. Luckily I brought my own big knife. If you like to cook, you might consider bringing your favorite pans. Probably need to update the listing/contract to read that the only grill is charcoal as we saw propane and had to go out and purchase briquettes and fluid. But, the refrigerator was awesome; very roomy. We had a wonderful stay overall.

Would highly recommend for a relaxing weekend away! We had so much fun using the outdoor area, the house itself was very cozy and well kept, and the sleeping arrangements comfortably fit all 8 of us. Great location in terms of being close to the beach (Jenner) and Guerneville (highly recommend Stumptown Brewery!). Couldn't find the river entrance but I'm sure we could've with a bit more effort :).Source: VRBOResponse:We're so glad you enjoyed the house and area!!! There's so much to do here! The river acess is just one house away and goes to Patterson Point Preserve - one of my favorite places along the lower Russian River. We'll get you there!- Megan

This is the place where we made the best memories of our life!!! My children were at the river from the moment we arrived. They have a greatly stocked kitchen! It has a great amout of towels, blankets, and chanels on the tv for a movie at night. They have one paddle board, a kayak, and many innertubes to use on the river. They have wonderful hammoks to enjoy the peace and quiet outside. The only downside of the home would be the living spaces are separate. You have to exit and go up the stairs from the outside to get to the other rooms. If you travel with little ones I think that is the only inconvenience. But, overall great location, nice home, and a great place to make memories.Stayed: August 2015Submitted: August 22, 2015Source: VRBORecommended for: Families with young children, Sightseeing, Adventure seekers, Families with teenagers
